Nikon RAW CODEC for Windows Vista

Nikon has released a codec (coder/decoder), enabling the new Vista Operating System to read Nikon RAW/NEF files natively. All Nikon DSLRs from the original D1 onwards are supported, as are all Coolpix cameras capable of writing RAW file output; namely the 5000, 5400, 5700, 8400, 8700 and 8800 models.

This basically extends the Vista file system so it can treat the RAW/NEF files like any other image files, including showing the thumbnail and EXIF data, doing a preview, loading it in the built-in Windows Photo Gallery (think Adobe Bridge), creating slideshows, etc.

This image shows the Vista File Browser, you see the NEF files as thumbnails. Note the file info at the bottom and the EXIF popup.

The following image shows the built-in EXIF editor (just right-click on the thumbnail and select info)

The following image shows the image view of the Vista Image Gallery. This works very much like Adobe Bridge; you can browse, view, tag, score, edit, crop, rotate, resize, print, create slideshows and burn CDs/DVDs.
