Thinking Blogger Awards

There is a new “meme” going around the blogosphere called the “Thinking Blogger Awards”. This meme requires that when someone gets tagged, they must tag five more “Thinking Bloggers” in turn. My friend Sieg over at The Atavist got tagged, and then I got the honour of making his list! So here is my own list [...]

Design work starting in Panama

We finally got the contract and legal stuff resolved with Delfin (our architect) and we have wired him the first payment this morning. We can now start in earnest on designing our new tropical house. We have already sent Delfin a bunch of changes to be applied to his preliminary design. We also sent him [...]

Posting directly from Microsoft Word 2007

I just discovered that Word 2007 has support for posting directly to several types of blogs including my favourite: WordPress. So I now can leverage all of Word’s editing power and benefit from the spelling and grammar checker.
I am writing this in Word, and then all I have to do is hit “Publish”. Very cool.

Blonde Bimbo vs. the World

Why is it that the death of an American blonde bimbo who had the IQ of a 3 year old and wasn’t even attractive anymore is making front page news in Canada? We’ve been hearing about her almost every day on our national news shows and in our national newspapers.
What is this fascination with so [...]

Animal Abuse

I have always been a strong supporter of animal rights and the ethical treatment of pets. I think it is tragic that people so irresponsibly purchase pets that they then release later when they realize that it takes some effort to care for them. Animals are living creatures, not toys. More often than not, they [...]

Loose Change, indeed…

Two weeks ago my favourite hard-hitting call-a-spade-a-spade take-no-prisoners journalist, George Monbiot of the British newspaper The Guardian, came out hard against the 9/11 conspiracy theorists and their cult movie Loose Change. Monbiot called them out for what they are: a bunch of talented nut-jobs who are taking attention away from the real issues and making [...]

Christian Fundamentalists in positions of power.

Every time I think there is still hope for America, some stupid Christian Fundamentalist comes around and smacks my hopes right back down into the gutter. I find it incredible that a modern developed country can elect wackos like that on a regular basis. How can these people make such public statements without committing political [...]

Tropical House Design

I found this interesting online article on general considerations for tropical house design. It covers all the basics and confirms much of our thinking for our own tropical house that we are currently designing.
It advocates building multiple pods, maximizing exterior space, maximinzing shade and ventilation, etc. Right in line with our own design!

Darwin wins another fight in Kansas

Common sense has prevailed, which is very good news for America. Perhaps the descent back into the dark ages will be averted after all.
By Carey Gillam
TOPEKA, Kansas (Reuters) - The Kansas Board of Education on Tuesday threw out science standards deemed hostile to evolution, undoing the work of Christian conservatives in the ongoing battle over [...]
