Shirley Horn dies at 71

The world lost another great lady of Jazz today. The pianist and vocalist Shirley Horn died at age 71.

She was one of my favourite Jazz artists and I couldn’t help but get totally lost in her music. She put so much emotion into every single song she sang, it goes straight to your heart. Her slow tempo and odd phrasing were so distinctive that I could easily recognize her after listening to a song for just a few seconds.

Two of my favourite Shirley Horn albums are I Remember Miles and  Here’s to Life.

If you like emotional romantic Jazz (not that mindless smooth ‘jazz’ crap) for those romantic dinners or special evenings in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine and a loved one, it doesn’t get much better then this.

Here’s to you Mrs. Horn!
